All other published authors, (including authors of children's books, novels, poetry, text books, guide books or other non-fiction) are not eligible, including books published overseas. Helpful hints

What is the theme?

The theme this year is 'Emergence'.

This is an uplifting and inspiring theme open to wide interpretation. It speaks to people emerging: from their backgrounds, a situation in their life, from any restraints…and fully into their true selves. It is a theme that could inspire a range of stories about personal journeys.

What does 'Emergence' mean to you? We'd like to hear your unique story and interpretation of the theme in the form of a non-fiction memoir piece.

Can I write it in third person?

No. The genre is first-person memoir. It's a story told through your own personal lens and understanding.

Can I fictionalise aspects of my story to protect privacy?

Yes you can. You can change names, dates and places to protect privacy if you wish. You are also free to apply literary fiction techniques to your storytelling such as dialogue and description.

How is it judged?

Entries will be judged by acclaimed authors Alice Pung and Christos Tsiolkas based on criteria covering originality, writing technique, storytelling and expression of the theme.

Can I enter in another language?

No, all entries must be submitted in English.

What is the genre?

The genre is first person memoir writing. Memoir writing is telling a story through your own eyes and understanding.

Can I enter under a pseudonym?

As long as you register for the competition under your real name, you can choose to publish your story under a pseudonym.

When you enter your story, you would need to add a note letting us know of your preferred pseudonym.

If your story is chosen as one of the four winners then we would be in touch with you before we published it.

Of course the point of the SBS Emerging Writers’ Competition is to raise the profile of emerging writers which is hard to do if they are unable to publicly identify with their work, so please take that into consideration.
