Australian singer, guitarist, and keyboard player Tim Nelson, known for being part of popular Brisbane band Cub Sport, has taken to social media to reveal that they identify as gender 'free'.
In a lengthy post shared on Instagram and Twitter, Nelson explained that "the gender binary has made navigating life more difficult," and that they would like to "move forward identifying as 'free'."
They added: "I feel very privileged to be able to connect with and express my whole self without risking my safety, employment status, home, etc.
"You can use pronouns he/him or they/them but this is more about identifying as free within myself," they explained.
"Free to follow my heart, free to flow with the energies inside and around me, free to form my own self not built by others."
Other Australian musicians were quick to post messages of support, with singer Mallrat describing the Brisbane-based artist as a "human shaped ultralight beam".
Jessica Origliasso from The Veronicas also commented with a rainbow emoji, followed by a butterfly.
Another follower wrote: "So much in this feels like the words I could never find, thank u timbo."
In the post, which was shared ahead of the band's new album release, Nelson explained that they'd been prompted to reflect on their gender identity by confused social media commenters.
"I had more and more comments on socials like 'Is that a boy or a girl?' 'What is that?' and I feel like they might have been trolling or attacking me but those comments actually made me happy," they wrote.
