The Good Fight explores the politics, technology and culture of the moment, which means that it’s always trying to find a new way into the conversations we’re all having on those issues. Every season of the show gives us a new starting point and you don’t need to have watched previous seasons to understand what is going on.

In fact, we believe it only takes 90 seconds to catch up on everything you need to know before watching it.

What’s the show about?

It’s a drama set in a law firm. While that premise isn’t new on television, what makes it feel fresh and vibrant is that the court cases are all incredibly modern and topical.

Storylines from last year included:

  • Melania Trump hiring the firm for a divorce
  • A DNA ancestry company selling customer data to an insurance company
  • A fight over voting machines, which caused a fist-fight with Nazis
  • One of the lawyers turned into an online meme after standing up to a racist

What happens in the show this year?

While last year the show focused on the Trump presidency, this year will be about the cultural side-effects of what happens with a figure like Trump in power, and how that impacts on the legal profession.

The show’s co-creator and producer Robert King:

“There’s a tendency that people have now of thinking subpoenas can be ignored, and we wanted to look at how it played out because so much of courtroom drama requires people following the rules. But what kind of courtroom drama do you have if [suddenly the rules don’t matter]?”

Who is in the show?

The returning cast includes Christine Baranski, Cush Jumbo, Audra McDonald, Sarah Steele, Michael Boatman, Nyambi Nyambi and Delroy Lindo.

Three new cast members join this season

Zach Grenier, Hugh Dancy (Hannibal) and John Larroquette. It’ll be fun having Larroquette in the cast – the actor became known for playing a lawyer on TV sitcom Night Court. His Good Fight character Gavin Firth is described as “warm, generous, sophisticated and potentially deadly.”

Did you mention Zach Grenier?

We sure did. You might know that The Good Fight is a spin-off from The Good Wife. In that show Zach Grenier played David Lee, a morally dubious member of the law firm. This year he’s back as a regular on The Good Fight. And we can’t wait.

But you didn’t mention Michael J. Fox?

We should have. Because he’s back on the show too. We don’t know how many episodes he’ll be on, but he’s reprising his role from The Good Wife too as dirt-bag lawyer Louis Canning.

Canning suffers from tardive dyskinesia – a condition which causes uncontrollable body movements. Ethically dubious, he uses this condition in court to get sympathy from juries.

When can I watch season 4?

Season 4 of The Good Fight premieres exclusively on SBS, airing weekly at 9.30pm from Wednesday 23 September. Episodes will be available at SBS On Demand after they go to air. Here is episode 1:
