In Greyzone, Borgen star Birgitte Hjort Soresen plays Victoria, a brilliant drone engineer who is taken hostage by terrorists who are after her technical prowess in designing their deadly drone. While they threaten the life of her son Oskar unless she meets their demands, the Danish and Swedish Secret Services work against the clock to prevent the impending terror-attack. Blood

When her mother dies suddenly, Cat Hogan returns to the family she’s left behind and spent years trying to avoid. Borgen

Borgen means the castle – it’s the nickname for Denmark’s parliamentary building. The story centres on Birgitte Nyborg (Sidse Babett Knudsen), Denmark’s first female Prime Minister. Elected in a landslide victory, Nyborg is under pressure to stay true to herself while navigating the heady world of spin doctors and political reporters, not to mention her fellow politicians. Tin Star

Tim Roth and Christina Hendricks star in this murder mystery set in Canada’s Rockies. The small town of Little Big Bear is home to employees of North Stream Oil. When a local doctor who voiced accusations against the corporation turns up dead, Roth’s Chief of Police releases this won’t be the quieter life he wanted for his family. Hendricks plays North Stream Oil’s ruthless director of stakeholder relations.

Fortitude

This British noir series is set in Fortitude, the world’s northernmost town. Considered also to be the most peaceful, the township is rocked when a prominent member of their tightknit community is found dead, brutally killed, in his own home. The sheriff (Richard Dormer) has his first ever murder to investigate; it won’t be his last. This series is not for the faint-hearted, with its (warning: linked article contains spoilers). Dennis Quaid, Stanley Tucci, Phoebe Nicholls (Downton Abbey) and Sofie Gråbøl (The Killing) also star.

Riviera

Julia Stiles plays Georgina, a woman whose life of luxury is torn apart when her billionaire husband (Anthony LaPaglia) is killed suddenly, and she suspects, not accidentally. This thriller is intoxicating not just for its glamorous setting, but also for its cast of characters, including Lena Olin, Dimitri Leonidas and Adrian Lester. Who is shady? Who can Georgina trust? Season 1 is streaming now, with Season 2 arriving on 29 August:

The Pier

From Spain comes this thrilling drama set in Valencia. Architect Alex (Verónica Sánchez) is the loving wife of investment banker Óscar (Álvaro Morte), who spends half the working week in Frankfurt. When Óscar’s body is discovered on a pier in the nearby national park, police saying it was suicide, Alex cannot believe it. Discovering he had a lover, Verónica (Irene Arcos), Alex assumes a false identity to befriend her and learn more about her husband’s hidden life and sudden death.

Back to Life

Miri Matteson (played by the show’s creator, Daisy Haggard) has just been released from 18 years in prison. She’s back living with her parents Caroline (Geraldine James) and Oscar (Richard Durden) who are thankfully not the boring couple they at first appear to be. (Haggard has given all the characters meaty storylines to chew on.) Miri faces the challenge of navigating an increasingly unfamiliar world in a small town community hellbent on reminding her of her past. The laugh-out-loud moments are welcome in this wonderful moving series.

The Last Man on Earth

It’s 2022, and Phil Miller (Will Forte, also the show’s creator) is the last man on Earth, the sole survivor of a cataclysmic event. Phil drives around the US, Canada and Mexico searching for other survivors to quell his deepening loneliness. He finally tracks down Carol (Kristen Schaal), but co-existing with her is more challenging than he anticipated. When more survivors show up, the challenges only grow. Comedy pros Jason Sudeikis (Saturday Night Live) and Kristen Wiig (Bridesmaids) also star, and January Jones (Mad Men) proves her comedy chops. All four seasons are now streaming at SBS On Demand.
