“You were talkin' to the press at the Oscars the other dayyy...”
Imagine, for a second, you’re Brad Pitt. Take as long as you need.
You’re in your best tux about to head into Hollywood’s Dolby Theatre. It’s the evening of February 9, 2020, and the 92nd Academy Awards are about to kick off. You’re in competition for Best Supporting Actor for your turn as laconic stuntman Cliff Booth in Quentin Tarantino’s ‘60s-set epic, Once Upon a Time... in Hollywood.
It’s a big night for you, and as you make your way through the phalanx of thrust microphones on the red carpet, you hear one celebrity reporter say he’s from Canada. What do you do?
If your answer was to take a moment to single out cult Canadian sitcom Letterkenny for some props, get yourself a f***ing Puppers. It seems that that one of Hollywood’s biggest talents, big shooter that he is, likes to relax by watching Wayne, Daryl, and the gang chirp at each other.
While our first reaction was to squeal like etalk host Ben Mulroney in the clip above, to be fair it’s not too much of a shock that Pitt is a down with the hicks and skids.
Laconic protagonist Wayne, played by series creator Jared Keeso, is not a million miles from a number of Pitt’s signature characters in terms of attitude and personality. Look at Pitt’s One Punch Mickey in Guy Ritchie’s crime caper, Snatch (2000), a swaggering Irish brawler with a devastating knockout knuckle; Wayne, a straight shooter by nature and inclination, doesn’t swagger, but he is proud of his Irish heritage and his fighting prowess is nothing short of legendary.
A better fit, of course, is Once Upon a Time... in Hollywood’s Cliff, the rile for which Pitt won his first acting Oscar. The laconic stuntman is so tough he fights Bruce Lee to a draw – and we can certainly see Wayne at least being up for the challenge, hundy p.
The question is, would Pitt be up for the challenge of making a guest appearance in Letterkenny? We’re just spit-balling here but the superstar, who himself hails from rural Georgia, could slot right in as some blow-in from the American branch – perhaps a long lost son of the legendary Uncle Eddie? Or perhaps he’d be better off as an immigrant skid, slyly referencing his turn as couch-bound pothead Floyd in Tony Scott’s True Romance (1993).
Of course, it’d all come to blows in the end, but we would pay cash money to see Keeso and Pitt exchange “How’re ya now? “Not so bad. N’you?” “Can’t complain.” By the produce stand. Seriously, this needs to happen. Pitter patter, Pitt.
