American Hustle

Amy Adams steals the show in David O. Russell's black comedy about crooks, schemers and underhanded undercover operations. An ambitious FBI agent forces a con man and his partner to infiltrate the dangerous but seductive world of New Jersey's powerbrokers and crime syndicates.

Be quick! It exits SBS On Demand very soon.

Minari

Steven Yeun is brilliant as a man taking a big risk with his family's future, and asking them to set aside their (considerable) doubts about his ability to turn a basic plot of land into working farm. Performances across the board are excellent; special shout-out to Best Supporting Actress Oscar winner Yuh-Jung Youn, for her turn as the family's disapproving matriarch.

A Single Man

Colin Firth is a stoicism personified in Tom Ford's about a grieving man prevented from expressing the true depths of his despair, on account of his deceased partner's gender.

A Hero

A man in debtor's prison, tries to convince his creditor to withdraw the complaint, but a chaotic twist of fate involving a bag of money complicates things considerably. This morality tale from Iranian auteur Asghar Farhadi ellicits a righ and multi-layered performance from Amir Jadidi.

Ip Man

In 1930s China, the town of Foshan is the legendary hub of Kung Fu martial arts. Donnie Yen is magnetic in his seminal role as the Ip Man, an accomplished grandmaster of Wing Chun Kung Fu who chooses to keep a low profile and doesn't take any students. After the Japanese invasion, the town descends into chaos and struggles to survive. Ip Man rises up to challenge General Miura and the Japanese Army. The eminent Wing Chun martial arts grandmaster, Yip Man, on which Yen's role is based, was renowned for teaching Bruce Lee the secrets of the art he became famous for. This classic film was followed up by three sequels.

The Infernal Affairs trilogy

One of the definitive gangster stories, the Infernal Affairs trilogy explores themes of identity and allegiance that go well beyond mere Good vs Evil, and in ways that are deeply enmeshed in Hong Kong's own identity struggles. The film tells of an undercover cop (Tony Leung) and a mafia mole (Andy Lau), both of them in deep, deep cover. Both men are embedded with the 'enemy' at a young age, and the film charts their risky rise through the ranks, as they glean vital intelligence for their (actual) higher-ups. The dual stars are the epitome of landmark leads. The smash hit spawned both a prequel and a sequel and an Oscar-winning Hollywood remake (The Departed).
