The International Space Station has gone silent. It seems disaster has struck in space. At the same time, policeman Isaak Turgan discovers a frozen body in Kazakhstan - soon identified as American astronaut Anthony Kurz, currently on a mission on the ISS. How can one man be in two places, dead and alive, at once? That's the mystery at the heart of this six-part French series. French astronaut Anna Zarathi is convinced Kurz is not dead, and forms an unlikely partnership with Tugran to pursue an unofficial investigation. What is really going on?

In a way, the James Webb telescope embodies the future, and the past. It’s a feat of incredible, never-before-possible engineering, that’s “going to stare 13 and a half billion years back in time,” as one of the experts interviewed in this fascinating documentary puts it. This is the story behind the world’s most advanced and most expensive space telescope, and the epic story of the scientists who have devoted their lives to developing it, including the tense months leading up to launch day.

James Webb: $10 Billion Space Telescope premiered Sunday 13 November on SBS VICELAND. Catch-up is available at SBS On Demand, but only for 30 days.

Indian Space Dreams

On a fraction of NASA’s budget, space scientists in Mumbai, Professor KP Singh, Professor Ravi Manchanda and Professor Raghu Rao, are designing and building instruments for India's first astronomical satellite to explore black holes. But as things start to go wrong, they soon discover the enormity of the challenge they have taken on.

Filmed over five years, we follow these astronomers on this, as KP calls it, “topsy-turvy ride” into space. Dr Vinita Navalkar, one of the young women on the Space team, is under pressure from her parents to get married but is determined to continue in her “dream job”. On the other side of the Space Centre wall is one of Mumbai’s largest slums where, every Saturday, Raghu teaches the children science and tells them about their mission. As launch day approaches, our fingers, like KP’s, are crossed as we witness the culmination of 15 years’ work – passion and endeavour against the odds.

Indian Space Dreams is streaming now at SBS On Demand.

The UnXplained: The Mysteries of Mars

From the producers of Ancient Aliens and The UnXplained sees William Shatner look into all kinds of fascinating, strange and inexplicable mysteries, talking to scientists, enthusiasts and historians about everything from to . And of course, the mysteries of space, a fitting topic for the Star Trek star.

In this episode, the red planet is the focus of attention. Human fascination with Mars dates back to ancient times. The Babylonians, Greeks and Romans all named their god of war after Mars. Much later, the development of telescopes and space programs ushered in a new era of investigations. Extreme details of the Martian surface could finally be seen, and people began noticing anomalies that might suggest the presence of life there. The successful landing on Mars of the Perseverance Rover on 18 February 2021 offered more data to advance our understanding, as plans continue to one day land a manned mission on our neighbour. Could real life – not just microbial life – have once have inhabited the planet? Could it do so again?

Season 3 of The UnXplained airs at 8.35pm Sundays on SBS VICELAND, with episodes available at SBS On Demand after they air. Episodes from seasons 1 and 2 are also streaming . See Mysteries of Mars, part of season 3, at SBS On Demand:

The UnXplained: Mysteries Of The Moon

For centuries, humanity has looked up at the Moon with a sense of wonder. But is the Moon just a rock floating in space? Or could it hold profound secrets? We’re learning new things all the time. Recently, scientists have discovered a huge mass of metal buried beneath the surface of the Moon, as well as water on its surface. These discoveries have compelled them to ask whether the Moon actually harboured life in the distant past. This and more are covered in this episode from season 2 of The UnXplained.

Season 3 of The UnXplained airs at 8.35pm Sundays on SBS VICELAND, with episodes available at SBS On Demand after they air. Episodes from seasons 1 and 2 are also streaming . See Mysteries Of The Moon, part of season 2, at SBS On Demand:

The Orville

Space is vast, imposing, calling out for adventure… and funny. At least when the crew of The Orville is involved. While the documentaries above look at humankind’s efforts to explore and understand space, this series leaps 400 years into the future. Family Guy star Seth Macfarlane and the rest of the creative team (which includes some Star Trek alumni) have put together a show that is both a loving nod to the classic sci-fi series, but also it’s own funny, clever creation. Join Ed Mercer (Macfarlane), the captain of the mid-level exploratory vessel The U.S.S. Orville, and his human-alien crew for three seasons of adventure, way out there.

All three seasons of The Orville are now streaming . Start at or dive into season 3:
