The Murdochs: Empire of Influence

This documentary series tells the definitive story of the world’s most powerful media family. Featuring exclusive reporting from The New York Times, interviews with people who worked inside the Murdoch companies, and decades of rich archival footage, it goes behind the scenes of the improbable rise of a media tycoon, his outsized political influence around the globe, and the brutal succession battle between his children over who will inherit his throne. It’s a story about high-stakes deal making, political manoeuvring and dynastic betrayals – and how the ambitions of one family birthed the largest conservative media empire in history and reshaped the entire world.

Seven-part series The Murdochs: Empire of Influence airs on SBS Thursdays at 7:30pm with episodes streaming  after broadcast.

Brian Cox: How the Other Half Live

This two-part series sees Brian Cox go on a personal quest as he explores our complicated relationship with money and wealth. Throughout the program he will tell his own story, from growing up in poverty to becoming a highly paid Hollywood actor, playing one of the richest and most bloodthirsty capitalists on TV. This is his mission: to remove his fear of poverty and to untangle the knotty issue of money and happiness.

His blunt questioning and passionate anger expose a world in which the richest 1% own half the world’s wealth, and the safety net for the poorest is being swept away on both sides of the Atlantic. The series shines a light on one of the most misunderstood and mysterious aspects of our everyday life – money.

Brian Cox: How the Other Half Live airs at 8:30pm on SBS, Wednesday 26 April and 3 May with episodes streaming  after broadcast.

Empires of New York

Set amid the grit, greed and glory of 1980s New York, this six-part series chronicles the meteoric rise of five icons who not only reshaped the city but contributed mightily to the world we live in today. Seizing opportunity in an era jolted by one cultural upheaval after another – MTV and 24-hour news, hip hop, drugs, the onset of the AIDS epidemic – these people shared a singular trait: the insatiable need to win at all costs. They broke rules, flaunted their wealth and delighted in the destruction of their enemies – and oddly at times, Americans came to love them for it. Narrated by Golden Globe® and Emmy Award® winner Paul Giamatti.
