Hudson & Rex

Yes, it’s that Rex! This is a Canadian remake of everyone’s favourite detective show, Inspector Rex. Here, Charlie Hudson (John Reardon) is more than happy to team up with his “highly trained law enforcement animal”, Rex, who is not only excellent at his job, but doesn’t chew his ear off like his human colleagues are wont to do. Mayko Nguyen plays his co-worker Sarah Truong and Kevin Hanchard plays Superintendent Joseph Donovan. This is a classic police procedural, with added canine cuteness.

Blue Lights

From the writers of The Salisbury Poisonings, Blue Lights takes us to Belfast where three rookie cops – young Annie (Katherine Devlin), midlife career-changer Grace (Sian Brooke) and dedicated if socially awkward Tommy (Nathan Braniff) – are hoping to be selected once their probation ends in two months. It’s unlikely all three will make it. Meanwhile, a large-scale investigation into a local gang has been suddenly shut down, begging the question, who is protecting them? This thrilling cop drama has been lauded as "one of TV's best shows", don't miss it.

Sandhamn Murders

Based on Viveca Sten’s hugely popular crime novel Still Waters, this series is set on the Swedish island of Sandhamn. Lawyer Nora Linde (Alexandra Rapaport) owns a summer house and helps Detective Alexander Forsman (Nicolai Cleve Broch, who took over from Jakob Cedergren as Detective Thomas Andreasson in seasons 1–6) solve murders in and around the area. The pair don their lightest cotton shirts and get to work catching crims as well as rays. This is a worthy addition to the Nordic Noir collection, with bonus sunshine. With many seasons, not as many episodes, this series is like the Scandi Midsomer Murders and you can’t miss it.

The Orchestra

The latest series from the creator of Borgen, The Orchestra is a comical and at time tragicomical drama that unfolds in and around the Danish National Symphony Orchestra. The newly appointed deputy director, Jeppe (Rasmus Bruun), arrives at his new job with a positive enthusiasm and wants to be liked by all (even though he is not an artist himself). The second-chair clarinettist of the orchestra, Bo (Frederik Cilius Jørgensen), is a loner, lives for music, thinks he's better than everyone else (and he might be) and he has one all-important goal; to become first-chair. The symphony orchestra is a colourful workplace with its very own set of rules, hierarchies and clashing egos and when Jeppe and Bo discover they have a common enemy, an unlikely friendship forms and the comedy and drama begins.

Rogue Heroes

Based on Ben Macintyre’s best-selling book, SAS: Rogue Heroes, this six-part British series is a dramatised account of how the Special Forces unit, known as the SAS, was formed under extraordinary circumstances in the darkest days of WWII. From the creator of Peaky Blinders, the humour’s just as dark to match and it features an all-star cast including Dominic West (The Crown), Connor Swindells (Vigil), Alfie Allen (Game of Thrones), with Jack O’Connell (Seberg) and Sofia Boutella (Climax). Season 2 is in production so jump into this high-octane series now.

This acclaimed, multiple Golden Globe Award-winning comedy drama created, co-written, produced by and starring musician and actor Donald Glover follows the lives of Earnest 'Earn' Marks (Glover), a young Princeton dropout with a two-year-old daughter, and his rapper cousin Alfred 'Paper Boi' Miles (Brian Tyree Henry), who break into Atlanta's music scene and try to get their lives off the ground. Their opposing views on art, commerce, success and race make their quest anything but smooth-sailing.

Alone & Alone Australia

Ten hardcore survivalists alone in the wilderness – no camera crew, no teams, no producers – on a single mission to stay alive. At stake is half a million dollars for the person who can last the longest. However, unlike genre progenitor Survivor, these folks really are alone; each contestant is in their own patch of wilderness and self-recording their efforts to live in the wild (everyone has a satellite phone for emergency use). It's a tough gig; competitors regularly lose around 30 per cent of their body mass due to low caloric intake, and medical evacuations are common. We couldn't do it, but we sure love watching the contestants try.
