Nothing is more concerning for a parent than the thought of children falling ill. A Specialist GP emphasises the importance of bolstering children's immune system to help them stay healthy and strong especially this cold season.

KEY POINTS
  • Dr. Scott says that parents should ensure that children receive a well-balanced diet.
  • When preparing food for children, Dr. Scott advises aiming for a variety of colours- incorporating greens, oranges, and reds- as each colour indicates different nutrients.
  • Dr. Scott reminds parents to focus on instilling healthy eating habits in their little ones from an early age to help children thrive and build strong immune systems for a lifetime of wellness.
One crucial aspect of achieving this goal is ensuring that children receive a well-balanced diet, although Specialist GP Dr. Angelica-Logarta Scott acknowledges the challenges of dealing with picky eaters.

"The main goal is to receive a well-balanced diet. I know it's hard because some children are picky. But if you can encourage your child to eat a well-balanced diet, with less sugar, then the better. Most children who eat a healthy diet do not need extra vitamin supplements, but there are exceptions to it,” says Dr. Scott.

Dr. Scott highlights key vitamins essential for children's health:

  • Vitamin D: Vital for bone health and immune function, Vitamin D can be found in fortified dairy products, leafy vegetables, fish, and exposure to sunlight. Adequate levels support bone growth and strength.
  • Iron: Crucial for healthy blood and energy levels, iron is abundant in sources such as red meat, beans, spinach, and iron-fortified cereals.
  • Vitamin A: Supports vision and skin health and can be found in foods like carrots, sweet potatoes, and dark leafy greens.
  • Vitamin C: Vital for immune system support, Vitamin C is abundant in citrus fruits, strawberries, bell peppers, and other fruits and vegetables.
When preparing food for children, Dr. Scott advises aiming for a variety of colours- incorporating greens, oranges, and reds- as each colour indicates different nutrients. "The more colours, the healthier," she emphasises.

For parents considering additional supplements due to picky eating habits, Dr. Scott suggests caution. "There is no harm in adding a supplement, but the goal is to teach them to adapt to healthy eating habits."

Regarding the promotion of height-enhancing vitamins, Dr. Scott addresses common misconceptions.

"There are brands that market themselves as beneficial for growth. But there are no vitamins proven to guarantee an increase in height. Height is primarily determined by genetics, although environmental factors, nutrition, and overall health can influence growth," she adds.

Dr. Scott also discusses the research on Chlorella Growth Factor (CGF), which some brands include in their supplements. "Research suggests several potential benefits," she notes, "but evidence is mixed, particularly regarding height."

While maintaining a balanced diet is paramount for children's health, she reminds parents to approach supplements with caution and focus on instilling healthy eating habits in their little ones from an early age.

By doing so, parents can help their children thrive and build strong immune systems for a lifetime of wellness.
