Hoping to have an heir, an aged couple in Punjab, India, has welcomed a set of twins.

The couple had an adult son but they lost him to an illness around two years ago. They also have three daughters.

reported that Gurwinder Kaur and her husband Balbir Singh, both 62, welcomed the twins, a girl and a boy, after deciding to become parents again.

The couple hails from Nangal Kalan village in Punjab, India.

The mother, Gurwinder Kaur, was past her menopause and decided to give birth through invitro fertilisation (IVF) at a private hospital.

“We have three daughters, two of them married. But after the death of our son, we felt the need for a son who can look after us as well as our land of nearly 10 acres," the father Balbir Singh told .

"In fact, our daughters requested us to opt for the IVF procedure. We have a grandson too, but our daughter-in-law took him away to her maternal house."
According to Gurwinder Kaur, the birth of her twins is a dream come true as she has two more kids at this age.

“We had earlier tried the IVF procedure, but it could not succeed,” she said.

Dr Gagandeep Garg of Ludhiana Children Hospital and Nursing Home said the babies and their mother were perfectly fine. “We used her husband’s sperm for the procedure. The babies took birth on November 20 and were kept under observation for a few days. The children and their mother have been discharged,” he said, adding that it was a rare case that an aged woman had delivered twins through IVF.
