Student who fled to India after fatal hit-run in Melbourne vows to fight extradition

Police said Puneet was drunk and driving at 148km/h in Melbourne's Southbank when he hit two pedestrians, killing one of them.

Puneet Puneet, an Indian international student in Australia fled to India while he was on bail in a hit-and-run case. He was allegedly drunk and crashed into two pedestrians, killing one and badly injuring another while driving at 148km/h in Melbourne’s Southbank in 2008.

Puneet is now facing extradition proceedings in a court in Delhi in India.

During a court hearing on Tuesday, he said he was innocent and he would fight the extradition till his death,

“I am innocent, I am being framed, the Australian Authorities are trying to extradite me based on my confession before Australian police,” he was quoted saying.

He said he pleaded guilty to the charges in Australia because he was in stress and shock.

In the court, Puneet’s counsel asked for a copy of the court documents and the complete case history. He also asked for the details of the investigation done by India’s External Affairs officials in the case.

 

His lawyer Kanhayia Singhal had earlier said Puneet was suffering from a kidney disease and he was "too weak". Mr. Singhal also said his client faced racial vilification if he were to return to Australia.

The court adjourned the case for December 8.

Puneet is alleged to have fled to India using the passport of a friend in February 2009 while he awaited sentencing in the 2008 hit-and-run case that resulted in the death of 19-year-old Queensland student Dean Hofstee. He remained in hiding in India before he was arrested by the the Indian police in Patiala district in 2013.
